The Dallas Chapter of the Federalist Society will be co-hosting an event with the Dallas Democratic Forum on Friday, October 16, at noon at the Belo Mansion. The event will be a panel discussion on emerging legal issues and policy concerns regarding gun ownership, featuring a diverse range of perspectives.

The panel will include Alan Gura of Gura & Possessky, P.L.L.C., who argued District of Columbia v. Heller and McDonald v. Chicago before the U.S. Supreme Court; Andrew Oldham, the Deputy General Counsel to Governor Greg Abbott and a former law clerk to Justice Samuel Alito; Carl Cecere of Cecere, PC, who was part of the team representing the District of Columbia in Heller; and Marsha Fishman, a Board Member of Organizing for Action and a gun control activist. The panel will be moderated by Professor Frederick Moss of SMU Dedman School of Law.

Please join us Wednesday, July 22, at noon at the Belo Mansion for our annual “Supreme Court Roundup” – a review of the notable decisions issued during the recently concluded term of the Supreme Court of the United States.

Our guest speaker will be Allyson N. Ho, a partner in the Dallas office of Morgan, Lewis, & Bockius LLP. Ms. Ho clerked for US Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor and Judge Jacques L. Wiener Jr. of the US Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. She also served as a special assistant to President George W. Bush and as a counselor to the US Attorney General.

On March 31, 2015, the Dallas Federalist Society will present a talk by Andrew S. Oldham on the Take Care Clause of the United States Constitution, and the limits it imposes on Presidential decisions not to enforce the law under various circumstances.

Mr. Oldham is Deputy General Counsel to Governor Greg Abbott. He previously served as a Deputy Solicitor General of Texas, an attorney-adviser in the Office of Legal Counsel at the United States Department of Justice, and a law clerk to Justice Samuel A. Alito of the United States Supreme Court.

On February 23, the Dallas Federalist Society will present a talk by David Cortman on the pending Supreme Court case Reed v. Town of Gilbert.

Mr. Cortman is senior counsel and vice president of litigation with Alliance Defending Freedom. He supervises a team of nearly 40 attorneys and legal staff who specialize in constitutional law, focusing on religious liberty, life, and marriage and family. Mr. Cortman argued before the Supreme Court last month on behalf of the petitioners in Reed v. Town of Gilbert. He will walk us through the background of Reed—which involves a church’s right to advertise its services—and the litigation of this critical First Amendment issue.

The event will be Monday, February 23, at noon, at the Belo Mansion.

The Dallas Lawyers’ Chapter of the Federalist Society will present a talk on abortion, public policy, and the law, by Professor Hadley Arkes of Amherst College.

Professor Arkes has been a member of the Amherst College faculty since 1966, where he is currently the Edward Ney Professor of American Institutions. His articles have appeared in both scholarly journals and in the popular press. Professor Arkes is also a contributor and advisor to First Things, a journal that took its name from his book of that title. Two of his most recent books include Natural Rights and the Right to Choose, and Constitutional Illusions & Anchoring Truths: The Touchstone of the Natural Law.

Professor Arkes was also the main advocate and architect of the Born-Alive Infants’ Protection Act, first proposed by him in 1988 as part of the debating kit for George H.W. Bush, and finally signed into law by George W. Bush on August 5, 2002.

The event will be Friday, January 23, at noon, at the Belo Mansion.

The Dallas Lawyers’ Chapter of the Federalist Society will host a talk by Hiram Sasser, Managing Director for Strategic Litigation at Liberty Institute, the country’s largest legal organization dedicated solely to defending and restoring religious liberty in America.

Mr. Sasser will discuss the serious challenges to religious liberty facing churches, schools, the military, and society in general. He will also share his insight on the many high-profile cases he has worked on, including Salazar v. Buono, the defense of the Mojave Desert Veterans Memorial Cross in the United States Supreme Court.

The event will be Wednesday, December 3, at noon, at the Belo Mansion.
